Frames
Frames are structures that include non-two force members. As such, a new solution approach will be required for frames. Frames are quite common in machine structures and typically have more complex member geometries compared to trusses.
General Approach for Frames
- Determine support forces.
- Create free-body diagrams for each member and joint of the frame.
- Apply Newton’s third law between connected members and joints.
- Identify and note which members are two force.
- Calculate the unknown forces on each member using the equilibrium equations.
