Frames

Frames are structures that include non-two force members. As such, a new solution approach will be required for frames. Frames are quite common in machine structures and typically have more complex member geometries compared to trusses.

General Approach for Frames

  1. Determine support forces.
  2. Create free-body diagrams for each member and joint of the frame.
  3. Apply Newton’s third law between connected members and joints.
  4. Identify and note which members are two force.
  5. Calculate the unknown forces on each member using the equilibrium equations.
